Many projects are labelled interdisciplinary when, in fact, another form of disciplinary practice is more apt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin, it\u2019s essential to clarify what constitutes a discipline. Two prevailing definitions exist: one rooted in the traditional categorisation of subjects within academia and another that identifies a discipline by its distinct tools, practices, and research methods\u2014the latter being pivotal for distinguishing between various collaborative approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an overview of each form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monodisciplinary Collaboration:<\/strong>\u00a0This involves practitioners from the same discipline working together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multidisciplinary:<\/strong>\u00a0A project where multiple disciplines contribute but remain distinct without integration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-disciplinary:<\/strong>\u00a0Involves several disciplines with limited integration; typically dominated by one field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interdisciplinary:<\/strong>\u00a0Characterized by the synthesis of tools and methods from multiple disciplines, often giving rise to a new hybrid discipline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transdisciplinary:<\/strong>\u00a0Extends beyond academia to include diverse participants and perspectives; its definition remains elusive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each form boasts unique characteristics and advantages that contribute to our understanding of complex issues from multiple angles.
